Gardening's gifts are many. It burns calories and gets you outdoors in spirit-lifting sunlight. Plus simply looking at a garden has been shown to help people heal better and need less medicine.
These gifts are perhaps most tangible in aloe vera (scientific name: Aloe barbadensis), a succulent plant whose gelatinous innards help heal burns and abrasions. (People with sensitive skin should use it with caution, however.)
The good news for non-gardeners: Aloe is almost indestructible, whether grown outdoors or as a houseplant, in sunshine or shade, watered too little or too much, says Chad Davis, curator of aloes and agaves at the Desert Botanical Garden.
