THE PROSTATE – WHO NEEDS TO KNOW?
Any man aged over 40!
Prostate problems affect men, mostly the over 50s, but PREVENTION is
better than cure (more of that later) which is why it is better to start
looking after your prostate in your 40s, ie before the problems start.
WHAT AND WHERE IS IT?
The prostate is a small gland about the size of a walnut and is
situated at the base of the bladder. A healthy prostate feels kind of rubbery
(apparently!).
The urethra, which carries your urine out, goes through the prostate
gland.
WHAT’S THE PROBLEM?
The biggest worry is obviously prostate cancer but there are other
problems. Enlargement of the prostate for example, and if your prostate is
misbehaving you may experience:
- weak urine stream
- hesitancy in the flow
- sense of urgency
- waking up often at night to go for a pee
- urinary retention
- on and off flow of urine
Sometimes there are no symptoms or the prostate can become hard. It is
said that if you can tick one or more of the above symptoms you need to
go to see your GP (if only to eliminate anything more serious) and you
also need to start taking supplements (more on those later).
PROSTATE CANCER
Dr Atherton shared a few statistics on this subject:
- Rates of prostate cancer have gone up by 25% in the last 5 years
- It is the 2nd most common cancer in men
- It accounts for 1 in 6 of male cancers
- A man has a 1 in 14 chance of getting prostate cancer
- All men would eventually get it if they lived long enough
The increase in prostate cancers, as well as other cancers, could be
linked to an increase in “free radicals” in our every day environment.
Free radicals are found in smoke (car exhaust fumes, cigarette etc), in
pollution and are also created by the sun’s rays. As we breathe in
polluted and unclean air we also take in free radicals which cause
oxidative damage to our cells.
ANTIOXIDANTS
One way to fight free radicals is to consume antioxidants in the form
of vitamins and minerals. Fruits and vegetables, especially green
vegetables, are a good source of antioxidants vitamins. However, the levels
of vitamins in fruit and veg are variable and start to decline as soon
as they are picked or pulled out of the ground.
The following are all good antioxidants:
Vitamins A, C and E
Minerals Selenium
Zinc
Iron
Copper
Bioflavonoids
MEDICAL TREATMENT FOR PROSTATE
There are basically 2 forms of medical treatment available for a
malfunctioning prostate, none of which looks particularly attractive and both
have serious side effects.
The drug treatment is based on the hormone oestrogen (yes, the female
hormone, I’ll leave you to ponder what it would do to your libido!).
The second option is a surgical operation to remove the enlarged
prostate. Quite apart from the dangers associated with a stay in hospital,
this operation can result in incontinence, impotence and infertility.
If you are over 50 the prospect of infertility might not worry you too
much, but what about incontinence and impotence?
As I said earlier, PREVENTION is better than cure, and stocking up on
antioxidants is a good way to help your body survive modern living.
PRODUCTS TO SUPPORT THE PROSTATE
As we cannot be sure of the freshness of the produce on our supermarket
shelves, it makes sense to supplement our diet with antioxidant
vitamins, minerals and our PRO6 supplement created specifically to strengthen
the prostate.
PRO6 – 3 tablets a day – contains:
- Vitamin E – antioxidant
- Selenium – antioxidant mineral now depleted from most soils
- Saw Palmetto – clinically proven to be as efficient as prescribed
drugs

Other products Dr Atherton recommends specifically for prostate health
are
- Aloe Gel for its content in antioxidant Vitamins A, C and E
- Bee Pollen, packed full of bioflavonoids
- Nature-Min, which contains Iron, Copper, Zinc and Selenium

PRODUCTS TO SUPPORT MEN
I would like to finish on a lighter note by mentioning the other
products which Dr Atherton recommended for men:

Gin Chia – Ginseng and Golden Chia to boost stamina
Ginkgo – brings blood to the extremities and “reaches the parts others
supplements cannot reach”!

I had no idea that increases in prostate cancers are caused by “free radicals” in our environment. Thanks for the information.
